HA3 Task 1 Structure – The Value Chain

Developers/Publishers

Developers are the people who make the game and come up with the main ideas for the game. Publishers are the people who are responsible for advertising and marketing the game. Some of these companies work on both developing the game and publishing however some companies just work on development. Other companies just publish the games however if they need a developer they may use outsourcing companies. These will bring in specialized professionals to help with factors such as art, animation, sound and graphics.

The Production Process


Ubisoft

Ubisoft are a French Multinational game company who develop and publish games. Ubisoft is the Third independent publisher worldwide. It has 29 studios in 19 countries. The largest studio is in Canada and employs 2,100 people. Ubisoft was founded in 1986 and is responsible for making games such as Rayman, Splinter Cell, Far Cry and  Assassin's Creed.

Examples of Ubisoft Video Games 












In March 1986 five brother founded a computer game publisher called Ubisoft in Carentoir, France. Yves Guillemot made deals with Electronic Arts, Sierra On-Line, and MicroProse. These were distributed just in France. Ubisoft then began to expand to other markets. These included the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

Console Manufacturers/First Party Publishers

A console manufacturer can also be known as a first party publisher. This is a company that manufactures and distributes video games.

Sony











An example of these manufacturers are Sony Computer Entertainment. This is a Japanese company based in Tokyo. They focus on electronics, game and financial services. These have made consoles such as PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and most recently PlayStation 4.

Examples of Sony Consoles 








PlayStation is a series of consoles developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. In was developed in December 1994 and now consists of four home consoles, a media centre, an online service, a line of controllers, two handhelds and a phone. The Original PlayStation was the first video game console to ship 100 million units 9 years after its launch. PlayStation 2 was released in 2000 and shipped over 155 million units by 2012. The PlayStation 3 was released in 2006 and sold over 80 million and finally the PlayStation 4 was released in 2013. This sold 1 million consoles in the first 24 hours of its release.

Distributors and Retail 

Distributor
Digital distribution is the delivery of different media content. These can include audio, video, software and video games. Distribution can also be used on the internet through downloadable software. 


An example of a game distributor is Click Entertainment. This is a leading UK based distributor and wholesale supplier of video games, consoles and accessories. This is throughout Europe and UK. 

Retail
Retailers are a supply chain who purchase goods and products from manufacturers and sell them on. They usually buy these products in large quantities. 


An example of a game retailer is Game. This is the UK's leading games retailer who sell British video games. Its origins lie in the founding of The Rhino Group.

Outsourcing Companies

When companies do not have the skills they need to do something in a game they call in outside companies to help them. These are called Outsourcing Companies. They can help with things such as graphics, sound, level design etc.

Virtuos 







This is an example of a game Outsourcing company. The company is based in China and has over 1100 staff. This company work alongside developers and provide their own skills and expertise when making games. An example of a game Virtuos have helped to develop and Design is Monster Jam for XBOX 360.

Press/Media

The press are a group of individuals who interview and write about the game and the game developer. They will ask the game developer questions about the game and ask for the public's opinion on gameplay. The media has the same purpose as the press however they focus more on public analysis of games and retain their information mostly from blogs. Both press and media also review game that may have already been released or are due to come out. 

An example of game press and media is IGN. This stands for Imagine Game Network. This is an entertainment website which focuses on video games, films and music. It reviews games from both a developers point of view and public opinion. The company was founded by Jonathan Simpson Bint in September 1996.
