HA3 Task 2 Job Roles


Creative Development 

Game Designer

A Game Designer is an individual or a group of individuals who cover all aspects of a game. They come up with ideas for the game such as storyline, genre, characters, levels, objectives etc. Once the game is designed the Game Designer then tells this to the rest of the development team who then add coding to the game.




An example of a game designer is Chris Senn. He is recognised for working on titles such as Sonic Xtreme on the Sega Saturn. He more recently has worked for companies such as Big Red and Treyarch. He worked on Call of Duty - Finest hour whilst working at Treyarch. This was released in 2004 .

Level Editor

A level editor (also known as a map, campaign or scenario editor) is a software tool used to design levels,maps,campaigns,etc. and virtual worlds for video games. An individual involved with the creation of the game levels is a level design or mapper.
One of the first 3D games which became popular partially due to level editors and fan-made content was Doom. The creation of various third-party editors led to the birth of an online community trading fan-made maps.


An example of a level designer is Adam Bromell he is recognised for working on titles such as Ghostbusters, Wolfenstine and The Outfit and currently works at Ubisoft as the lead artist.

Lead Artist

The lead artist (also known as the art director or creative manager)is responsible for the overall look of the game. Working with the Games Designer and Lead Programmer the lead artist devises the games visual style and directs the production of all visual material throughout the game’s development.

Artist

Artists create the visual elements of a game, such as characters, scenery, objects, vehicles, surface textures, clothing,props and even user interface components.They also create concept art and storyboards which help communicate the proposed visual elements during the pre-production phase.








An example of a game artist is Tommy Kinnerup he made concept art for games such as Injustice Gods Among Us, Angry Birds, Project Spark and Watch Dogs.

Technical Artist
The Technical Artist acts as a bridge between the Artists and Programmers working on a game. They ensure art assets can easy be integrated into a game without sacrificing the overall artistic vision or exceeding the technical limits of the chosen platform.




An example of a Technical Artist for games is Lee J. Meza. He is a 3D Technical Artist and has worked on titles such as Uncharted 3, Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, Minibots and The Last of Us DLC.. He currently works at Sony Entertainment Company in San Diego.

Animator

An animator helps to give life to characters in a game. It concentrates on movement and behaviour. They also concentrate on the rigging and skinning of the characters which create a structure for them. They need to ensure they have a library of movements for each character to store their individual animations for use throughout the game. 





An example of an animator of games is Ashley Ruhl. She has worked on games such as Star Wars - The Old Republic and Defiance. She has worked with animated cameras and camera effects. She has also worked with diffierent teams to create cinematics for games.

Audio Engineer 

An audio engineer produces the soundtrack for a game. They also help with sounds effects such as gunshots, explosions, characters voices, vehicles and weather (rain or wind). An adio engineer can be either a team of people or can often be just one or two people working individually.



An example of an audio engineer is Marc Carlton. He is not only an audio engineer but also a composer and sound designer at Fisher Price. He is best recognised with his work towards the well known game Guitar Hero 5. He has worked with companies such as Activision and Clean Cuts.

Technical Development

Game Programmer
Game programmers work at the heart of the game. They create the computer codes which design and run the game. The use ready made code libraries and create custom made ones. The test codes and fix bugs they also develop tools for other members of the development team to use. 


An example of a game programmer is Molly Jameson. She is based and works in Los Angeles. She is experienced in software development with the emphasis on game programming. Molly has worked on titles such as Sunset Overdrive, Resistance 3 and her most recent work in on the new PS4 game Ratchet and Clank.

Lead Game Programmer 
A lead game programmer is responsible for leading the programming team. They make the computer code which runs and controls the game. They have various specialisms which include artificial intelligence, game development, user interface, tool development and physics. A lead game programmer also manages production of different versions of games. They help to assist the Project manager.

Project Implementation

Project Manager/Producer
The project manager/producer is resposible for ensuring the safe delivery of a game. Making sure that it is within budget and on time. They also control the finance and sources needed to coordinate the work of the production team. They also ensure the quality and vision of the game is maintained. 


An example of a Project Manager/Proucer is Glen Schofield. He works in Seattle. He was the co founder fo the games company Sledgehammer games and was the Vice President for EA. He has worked with Activision on titles such as Modern Warfare 3, Dead Space and Advanced Warfare. Glen has developed and managed over 50 games.

Assistant Producer
An assistant producer or junior work with the production staff to ensure timely delivery of the highest quality products. They handle communication between publishers and developers and coordinate work on projects such as managing art assets. They are employed by publishers as well as developers. 


An example of an Assistant Producer is Walter Gray IV. He is a founding member of Savage Players. He is most famous for his work on popular games such as The Last of Us and Infamous: Second Son.

External Producer
An External Producer is responsible for the safe delivery of a game. They are usually employed by a game publisher. They work at the publishers head office and liase between publishers sales, marketing department and game developers. They also work closely with the internal producer.

Creative Director
A creative director is the key person during game development. They oversee high level decisions. They are responsible for the overall look and feel of the game. This is a fairly new position in the game industry. The creative director are ultimately the creator of the original game concept and characters.


An example of a creative director is Bret Robbins. He is most famous for his work on titles such as Dead Space (Survival Horror), Lord of The Rings: Return of the king (Fantasy) and his most recent game Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Starring Kevin Spacey. The first two titles were developed when he worked with Electronic Arts.

Quality Assurance 

QATester
A QA Tester are responsible for testing, tuning, de-bugging and suggesting detailed refinements for a computer game. They ensure the quality and playability of the finished game. Their job role is to test the game and analyse its performance. They tests for bugs including crashes and glitches in the programming. 




An example of a Quality Assurance Tester is Billy Seay. He currently works in Orlando Florida at the well known company EA (Electronic Arts).

Business Development

Public Relations Manager
A public relations managers job is to manage the companies reputation. They have a major influence on public's opinions and behaviour. They use different forms of media and communication to establish goodwill between the organisation and the public. 

An example public relations manager is Philip Doust. He works for Rockstar games. He originally became their PR manager in 2010 but was promoted to Senior PR manager in 2012.

Product Manager
The product manager works alongside the marketing team to maximise the sales of the game they are working on. The usually work with game publishers or independent marketing companies and have to market the marketing budget in a responsible manner.


Hjamal Hedman is the Product Manager for Activision. He is responsible for helping with marketing of both the company and game sales.

Marketing Executive
Marketing executives help to promote a product, service or idea. they are responsible for planning, advertising, publics relations, event organisation, product development, distribution, sponsorship and research. The job includes various different roles and is often challenging and fast paced.


An example of a marketing executive is Andrew Wilson. He is the Australian Chief marketing executive for EA (Electronic Arts). He joined in 2000 and worked in the companies Asian and European markets.

Marketing Manager
Marketing management is business discipline which focuses on the marketing techniques and the management of a firms marketing resources and activities. Marketing managers are often responsible for influencing the level, timing and composition of customer demand. 

An example of a marketing manager is Brandon Winfrey. His job is to manage, engage and grow the community of insomniac games such Sunset Overdrive, Outernaughts, Ratchet and Clank and fuse. He also has to host, edit and rite sunset TV which is a TV show with up to date information about the game Sunset Overdrive.
